What’s in a name? Busking isn’t quite what you might think it is

When you hear the words “busker” or “street musician”...

what’s the first image that comes to mind? Maybe you imagine a homeless man, down on his luck, sitting on a street corner quietly playing a few tunes on his whistle hoping for a few pennies? Or maybe you imagine some old (or young), grubby, alcoholic, bearded  guy with a guitar badly singing “Wonderwall” for the 10th time that day? Sometimes you might look down into their case or hat and wonder how much money is in there. Maybe you sometimes wonder if they have miserable lives, and secretly hope they do better for themselves?

Well, I’m a busker and I’m none of those things. I’m proud to perform on the street and I love what I do. The more people that walk by, the larger my audience, and the more appreciation I receive for my talent. Doesn’t matter to me what you call it. I entertain the masses and that makes me happy. I’m not perfect (nobody is), but I know I’m on the right track if I sound better than I did the day before.

Buskers come from all walks of life with various types and levels of talent.

Maybe you play an instrument, but don’t think you have the courage to go out and busk? Or maybe you just wonder what the deal is with the people you pass by daily while you’re walking around town on your lunch break?
